Mt. Wrightson Ascent - 9/9/18 - 5.2 miles to the top

Great to see so many people turn out today! - we had 46 runners in all for this year's Wrightson Ascent, plus some family hikers and dogs. Big thanks to "George & Anne" - they're the ones to thank apparently for the super-clean Super Trail up top. They spent a couple weeks clearing brush recently and were on the mountain today for their 443rd Wrightson summit.

Here's the roundup - hope to see y'all on the trails soon!

Sabino Basin - 9/16/18 - 13.7 miles

We had 34 TTR runners today (33 depicted below); all of whom made it home safely. Thanks, I appreciated a relaxing, stress-free morning sitting around and chatting. Alex Aldridge’s time is just for his Sabino Basin portion of the run, but he ran another dozen miles for the heck of it. Robert, Billy and Fernando didn’t heed anyone’s warning, and ventured out for an additional Blackett’s in 90+ degrees and the midday sun. Rumor has it, they didn’t have as good of a time as they had intended. There should probably be an asterisk next to everyone’s times to indicate that the temps were, uh… higher than optimal. Thanks all for coming out.

Santa Rita Peaks (NEW!) - 9/30/18 - 17.5 miles

Yesterday we had 18 runners tackle the new route in full and 11 runners who came out for differentiating distances and route segments. For a new route 29 people is a strong showing. The weather was perfect and the energy was electric. We had no runners go off trail and get lost for significant amounts of time and nobody got attacked by the bees! Many folks has a lot great things to say about the views of the route and the opportunity to summit both Hopkins and Wrightson. We had a good set of diversified opinions on the climb and the runnable down hill segments and all the bear scat. Some comments I took note of were "Super Trail, it just keep going and going" "I loved the climb, but all that downhill" ", "f*** that s***", "I had enough of going up", "there was bear poop everywhere", "what are those bears eating, that looked weird". The group was was a pleasure to be around and I am grateful for the opportunity to give back and be part of our newest route. Thanks to all the runners who came out to support this run and for all the smiles and positive energy. The results are listed by hour below.

Florida-Madera-Wrightson - 10/14/18 - 26 miles

We broke last year's record turnout of 9 with a new record 14 folks toeing the line including 2 who drive down from Phx to join us. 5 hearty souls took on the whole 9,750 ft of climb, ~marathon distance course, 6 stuck to the ~15 mi Florida Canyon Wrightson ascent, and 3 (5 counting Clyde and ... darn it Kaitlin & Andrew, what was your pup's name again?) enjoyed the ~9 mi Florida Saddle Out & Back.

No other new records this year, at least unrelated to the weather--it was easily the coolest year and with the most available water in springs and streams--what a gorgeous day for a trot!

Thanks to all of you for coming out! Thanks to Joe Dana for Madera Cnyn aid! Long Live TTR!

Bear Canyon Loop - 10/21/18 - 17 miles

38 TTR runners on the course on the Classic Bear Canyon Loop (BCL) Course this morning. The weather was perfect and all made it back safely, although there was some bleeding. Mike Duer suffered a disheartening fall and solid knock to the knee, but Rogelio Hernandez definitely takes the award most battle scarred runner with cuts to both legs and upper torso. Since the course was overgrown and it appeared record times were off the table, many took the opportunity to take advantage of the late season rains and swim in the pools with the waterfalls flowing. It was my pleasure to support this great event and look forward to putting in some miles in the future. Thank you all for coming out!!

Mt. Lemon Ascent - 10/28/18 - 18.6 miles

The word of the day yesterday was HOT and the comment we heard from most runners coming in was some form of dread they felt once they reached Romero Pass. Despite the temps and the climb everyone came in mostly healthy and in good spirits. Jim and I had a good time supporting and visiting with such a great group of runners. A special thanks to those who helped transport runners back down, including Ben Markwart who drove all the way back up the mountain and gave Myk Brown a ride home! Thank you all so much!

As always, the Norris Steps were a featured topic of discussion (write your congressman!). It was a great day, nobody got (too) lost and no reported injuries.

Tortolita Mountain Loop - 1/6/19 - 16.3 miles

It was chilly and wet at the start of this Tortolita MT run. Most spoke of limited visibility in the low clouds. Some had a bit of confusion finding trail in the overcast, heading off trail on the newish Ridgeline Trail. Short of a scraped up nose from a fall in the wash all arrived at the finish unscathed.

Keystone Traverse - 3/10/19 - 15 miles

Fellow Runners,

It was a big turn out for the Traverse! 42 souls toed the line braving increasingly strong winds, cool temperatures, and great views. Relying only on their Barkley marathon navigating skills with the infamous "Keystone Traverse Map" and some aid at the 8.6 mile aid station run by Daniel Harris they all made it back to the finish mostly unscathed. Some stories of "bonus mileage "were shared along with wind aided 5 minute miles. No major critter sightings as the wind had them fairly inactive. Quite a few had their first run with TTR as well surely ticking off a major item off their bucket list. Fernando was excellent in his co-hosting RD duty and definitely has what it takes to go to the big leagues next year!

Esperero Canyon Loop - 3/17/19 - 21 miles

It was a beautiful morning with 27 people taking on the challenge of all or part of the loop. Runners encountered snow, downed trees and knee deep water crossings. All returned in good shape with only minor signs of damage. No critters were encountered, at least none reported. Duane and Julie Arter were doing their own thing and stopped in to visit. Thanks to everyone for coming out. Here are the results. Please let me know if any corrections are needed.

The results are in from yesterday’s Mica Mountain Marathon. It was a great day to be on the trails and an even greater day if you were lucky enough to run Mica Mountain. The temps were perfect and unlike last year, you didn’t freeze or come down the mountain with ice on your beard.

Catalina Peaks - 4/7/19 - 19.5 miles

Here’s the rundown on Catalina Peaks.

We had 18 starters from Prison Camp and 21 finishers. That includes 2 starters from San Pedro Vista, and the Intrepid Dallas Stevens that ran down from the top to meet up with Renee and then run back up with her.

I should make a note about trail conditions this year - the upper section of the route was pretty squishy, in particular through Sunset and the culvert. Aspen Draw was described as downright exciting. We did run this route earlier than we have in past years, it might be a good idea to move this run later in the month again next year. In spite of the trail conditions we did have a new CR by Catlow, who on his first go on this route crushed Duer’s record by 18 minutes at a reportedly “tempo” pace.

Note that the distances reported are a little different, though the nominal route distance is 19.5, I pulled individual distances off of Strava where I could, mostly because I’m interested as to where people tend to get lost. The route is designed so that the published route is pretty much the shortest trail distance in between Hirabayashi and the ski area, well, except for that sneak trail on Bigelow, which I’m happy to see that everyone seemed to be honest about, as near as I can tell. Kudos in particular to Moira and Brianna for recovering that section.

I’m super curious as to where James Schroeder got to, James, do you have a GPS track I could take a look at?

Anyway, Strava also stresses me out because it seems to track run time rather than gun time, and the downloaded GPXs do not contain timing info. All times listed are elapsed (gun) times. Steve Terry, in particular, let me know if I have your time right, I have you finishing at 12:37 PM on the original timing sheet, which doesn’t seem correct.

Also a special shout out to my aid station helps, Bob Bachani, Gary Parcher, and Pam “I just had back surgery!” Hoyt, and also everyone else that volunteered to drive, Bob Bevill, John Brown, Dave Putney, and Dallas Stevens. You all rock.
