Even though it’s the end of September, summer is still holding on in Tucson.  The morning started warm with temperatures in the low 70’s.  Even though most of the run stayed in the shade, the temperature warmed up quickly.  Twenty-four people started this year’s Sabino Basin Run, but many chose to cut it short by coming down the tram road after running phone line trail.  Several decided to run to the basin, but not run phoneline back, choosing to run the tram road instead.  Several people took some falls or tumbles on the trail, but no serious injuries resulted.  Trish Duarte sported a nice swollen ankle from twisting it near the basin and John Mendola cut his hand after tangling with the fencing the forest Service placed at the intersection of phoneline and switchbacks down to the tram road.

Thirteen runners started the new Romero Pass run on a warm November morning.  Although the start was warm and muggy, runners were greeted with a nice breeze and the first rain sprinkles of winter.  Ken Greco donated blood to the new course on three different occasions and finally had the opportunity to use his impressive first aid kit.  Chris Fall took a wrong turn at Romero Pools and followed a game trail for 40 minutes.  After crawling under several bushes he finally figured out he was on the wrong trail.  Chase and Trish Duarte supplied burgers, snacks and pale ale for an after run picnic at Catalina State Park.  Ross Zimmerman and Gene Joseph kept us entertained with stories from the old days.  Pierce Cornelius made the group feel old and slow when he passed on the after run snacks and ran home.  G.Ford

A record number of runners turned out for this year’s run.  The Leonid meteor showers were at their peak in the early morning hours and many of the runners started early to see the show.  Early morning start times varied from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m. with the regular start at 7 a.m.. The morning temperature was very mild with a low in the lower 50’s.  This fall has been extremely dry.  All of the stream crossings were dry and there was no snow at the top.  All of the runners enjoyed not having to run the road down to the ski area.  Several runners decided a run to the top wasn’t enough fun for the day.  Julie Arter drove 6 mountain  bikes to the top and Garrett, Paul and Duane plus three of their friends rode their bikes down Red Ridge trail to Charouleau Gap and down to Garrett’s house in Catalina.  Rick Kelley ran down from the top after his run to the top and encountered a raging forest fire alongside Lemmon trail about a mile above the Wilderness of Rocks trail.  ja

The temperature at the start of the run was approximately 29°.  Most of the runners showed up minutes before the start and with the time to get everyone signed up and provide a trail briefing the start was more than 10 minutes late.  The delayed start had the group shivering but spirited.  Chase Duarte ran an excellent time of 2:10:40, which was a PR by 4 minutes.  Beth Darnall was the first women with a time of 2:41:41, which is excellent considering she had never been on the trail before.  The oldest finisher was Celestino Fernandez with an excellent 2:43:33.  Ross Zimmerman showed that his training is paying off with a 3:14:28.  Kandi Karuza improved her PR from the October event by 30 minutes with a time of 4:03:22.  Snacks and beverages were provided to the runners who stayed around socializing while 3 runners embarked on a second loop.  Bill Cuculic, Ken Greco and John Mark all had good days and looked fresh when they each finished.  Two runners took a wrong turn at Sycamore trail junction and ended up heading towards Prison Camp before being redirected by hikers.  They finished none the worse for the wear and eager for the next event. Twenty-eight people arrived at the end of Speedway; nine to run Douglass Springs, eighteen to run Cowhead Saddle, and one to enjoy the trail toward Douglass.  In addition, a contingent of spouses/partners is now showing up to hike while the others run.  The temperature at the start-41°-and clear skies provided ideal conditions.  Last year we were all treated to fields of wildflowers but this year things looked rather parched and barren and all of the creek crossings below Douglass were dry.  Snow appeared on the trail above Douglass Springs but had not been broken, so downhill running conditions were excellent.  Bicyclist Celestino Fernandez gave Ken Greco a good challenge while Julie Arter has returned to the trails in fine form.  Kim Ferranti was not deterred by her adventure in Bear Canyon last time and is finding the series to be a lot of fun; we hope to see more of her.  Co-run host Enrique Aviles served as run photographer again and this year pictures of the runners were e-mailed the week following the event.  J.Avilles

It was a warm and fairly clear day but fortunately not as warm as it can get for this run.  We had an excellent turnout and a very good finishing percentage.  Yellow ribbons were distributed to runners to indicate to Park Rangers to allow them to pass without paying the obligatory fee.  Nobody was ever challenged, however. A nice warm day brought out 10 runners for the 6:30 a.m. start. There were 5 runners to complete the entire course.  Interestingly, the first four finishers all ran out of water about one mile form the finish.  Ross, who was fifth, had lots of water left when he finished. Nice management of your water Ross!
